Built in 1892 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, the palace was initially conceived as an act of charity to provide employment to the famine-stricken population of the region. Over five years, approximately 100,000 workers contributed to its construction, which cost around ₹12 lakh at the time .
Architectural Marvel
The palace is an exquisite example of Indo-Saracenic architecture, blending Islamic, Italian, and Gothic styles. Spanning 19 acres, with a built-up area of 7 acres, the structure features Italian arches, spacious halls, high ceilings, and intricate carvings . Historical Significance
The Aga Khan Palace holds a pivotal place in India’s freedom movement. Following the launch of the Quit India Movement in 1942, Mahatma Gandhi, his wife Kasturba Gandhi, his secretary Mahadev Desai, and other prominent leaders were interned here by the British authorities from August 9, 1942, to May 6, 1944 . Tragically, both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahadev Desai passed away during their captivity, and their samadhis (memorials) are located within the palace grounds
Gandhi National Memorial
In 1969, Prince Karim Aga Khan IV donated the palace to the Government of India in memory of Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy . Today, the palace serves as the Gandhi National Memorial, managed by the Gandhi Memorial Society. The museum within houses a rich collection of photographs, personal artifacts, and memorabilia related to Gandhi’s life and the freedom struggle.
