Autorickshaw Drivers Hike Fares for Diwali Shoppers, Charge 2-3 Times Rates for Short Trips

Date:

Pune : With Diwali shopping in full swing, Pune’s busy markets like Laxmi Road and Raviwar Peth are drawing crowds, but shoppers are facing steep fare hikes from autorickshaw drivers. Reports indicate that drivers are refusing to use meters and instead demanding fares two to three times the usual rate, especially for short rides. This practice is causing particular frustration for women and senior citizens, who find themselves with limited options as drivers capitalize on the festive rush.

Amit Joshi, a commuter, shared his experience, saying, “I had to pay Rs 100 for a 1.2 km ride, which would have been no more than Rs 50 on the meter. The driver refused to use the meter and demanded a higher fare.” Another shopper, Shruti Jadhav, faced similar issues near bus stops and metro stations, where she was charged Rs 150 for a trip that should have cost Rs 60. “Drivers know people are pressed for options in these high-traffic spots, so they take advantage,” she explained.

Senior citizens, too, are feeling the pinch. Sunita Patil, a 65-year-old shopper, noted, “I don’t feel comfortable arguing with drivers when they blatantly ignore the meter. Authorities need to intervene to control this issue.” Pune residents are now urging local authorities to enforce strict meter usage and ensure fair fares during the festive season. For many, it’s a choice between paying high fares or foregoing the convenience of autorickshaw travel altogether.
